Mister had a birthday! And tart!

Last week we celebrated a birthday here in our house. Mister turned another year older and crankier wiser. We generally prefer to keep it low key and so we did.

This picture is unrelated, but I’m going to leave it here just for fun.DSCN0515

Birthday dinner was cooked by the birthday boy himself, who insists that he enjoys cooking his own special dinner. We enjoyed a perfectly grilled steak with roasted potatoes and asparagus.dinner

Mister’s choice, we paired our dinner with a delightful bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. It complimented the steak and really made the meal, but I won’t blabber on since we covered that on Wine Wednesday.

We wrapped up the evening with the main event – the birthday tart! The first year we lived together Bryan insisted on making his own steak dinner for his birthday and that he didn’t want a cake. I insisted that I had to contribute something so I made him choose a dessert.tart in progress

Here birthday tart was born. A flaky crust filled with rich pastry cream and topped with berries. It doesn’t get more delicious than that. Any who, I some how managed to pull it off the first year and it has been a tradition ever since.Tart

I wish I could take credit for this one, but here all of the credit goes to my BFF Mark Bittman and his bible How to Cook Everything.

All in all, I would say it was both a great and delicious way to kick off another year.

What’s your favorite birthday tradition?

It looks like he had a great birthday!! That tart looks delicious! I don’t really have a tradition for my birthday except to have a cupcake! 🙂
